Introduction

There could be any reason to be bored and from somewhere in heart, a voice knocks us telling “Need a relief”! And without doubt, travelling is the best recruitment to get such a peace. There are huge suggestions of places for traveling fact. ‘Saint Martin’s Island’ accomplish our dream of traveling.

The name of this island belongs to an authentic history. During the 14th century, the Cannibalistic Carib Indians followed the war-like tribe called Arawak Indians. They named St. Martin’s Island as Soualiga, which means “Salt Island”. On November 11th, 1493, Christopher Columbus landed on the island and the island got its name. Now this remarkable day is celebrated as Saint Martin’s day.

Around just 250 years ago, Arabian sailors built a residence and also named this island as ‘Zajira’. Having a plenty of coconut trees, locals named the island as ‘Narical Gingira’. It’s also called as ‘Daruchini Dwip’.

1.Location

Saint Martin’s Island is the peerless continental ‘Coral Island’ surrounded by the Bay of Bengal and it’s located at the southern part in Chittagong Division of Bangladesh separated from the mainland by a channel of 9 km wide at the south of the tip of the Cox’s Bazar-Teknaf peninsula. The total area of this small island is only about 14 km and almost 7,000 people live on this island. This flat island is 3.6 m above the sea level.

2.Tourist Attractions

The island is endowed with a lot of tranquil beauties by vast marine properties. Cool breeze, transparent blue water, soothing surroundings, the wide sky will heal our troubled soul.

Another most beautiful tourist attraction named ‘Chera Dwip’ is an extension surrounded by the coral reef of the island. The greenery land of Chera Dwip enhances the glory of Saint Martin’s Island. Tourists are suggested to go there early and turn
back before sunset.

3.Resources

The island is enriched with extensive biodiversity significance. Damsel, parrot, surgeon, groupers, snappers, emperors, butterfly, mollusks, windowpane oysters, crabs, echinoderms, sea-urchins, sea-cucumber, colorful nudibranch, bryozoans, sea turtles and brittle stars have been found here abundantly.

Some mangrove species like keya, khalshi, kirpa, horgoza and jhao play the vital role to attract the tourists.

4.How to go

To reach the Island, we can go first to ‘Teknaf Ghat’ renting any car or jeep from Cox’s Bazar. Then we can start cruising to the Island by ship available there in Teknaf. Tourists must reach before 9 am to avoid missing the schedule because this is the only

May and June or between November and mid-December are the best times ever to visit Saint Martin’s Island. Because although island’s weather is much pleasant yearround, within those months rain showers are less and favorable. Hotel authorities advertise their best rate over those periods of time for the tourist.

An authentic taste of Bar-B-Que is available for the evening at the front of the pier. Additionally, though dried fish is a bit expensive but much more fresh and organic than those are available at Cox’s Bazar. Then what’s to wait for! Time to get the backpack, time to let the eyes dazzled by the amazing beauty of Saint Martin’s Island.
