Shat Gambuj Mosque represents the meaning of mosque with 60 domes, was built in 1449. The mosque is called as Sixty Dome Mosque, because of the mosque has 77 square domes. Shat Gambuj Mosque is a UNESCO world heritage site and the largest mosque in Bangladesh in the country from the Sultanate period. It has been praised as “the most impressive Muslim monuments in the whole of the Indian subcontinent.”
The mosque is famous for the Tughlaq styled interior with terracotta decoration. A great and famous muslim saint ‘Khan Jahan Ali’ was the architect and general contractor of Shat Gombuj Mosque at around 1450 A.D. The walls of the mosque are made from tapered brick and unusually thick. Shat Gambuj Mosque was used for ruling the area and used as a court at the Sultanate period.
The mosque was situated on the eastern bank of the Ghoradighi, around three miles west of the present Bagerhat town. The surrounded compound was genuinely entered through two gateways – one in the east, now restored and repaired and the other in the north, no longer existed.
The eastern gateway of the mosque, facing cardinally the central archway at the mosque, appears to be a unique monument by itself. It measures approximately as 7.92m by 2.44m, structured by an archway and having a span of around 2.44m with a wonderful curve at the peak.
Internal view of the Shat Gombuj Mosque is also a key attraction for the visitors. This historical mosque is divided by 6 rows of pillars into 7 longitudinal aisles from north to south. And another 11 bays running from east to west separately with great measurement. Therefore, the mosque has 10 mihrabs in total. The vast compound, the extended entrance and the ancient decoration of terracotta make one remember the Sultanate period as well.
The peaceful environment of the Shat Gombuj Mosque and the breeze around the area are the best additional examples for natural resources that keep our troubled mind at peace.
